US FDA approves a new tuberculosis pill

Food and Drug Administration approves new tuberculosis pill with two other antibiotics and amounts to a cure for about 90 percent of patients – even those with highly drug-resistant forms of the disease, including those with HIV.

Tuberculosis kills about 1.6 million people annually. It spreads through droplets when someone sick with tuberculosis sneezes or coughs.

Tuberculosis attacks the lungs and other organs.

In 2017, 87% of new TB cases occurred in the 30 high TB burden countries. Eight countries accounted for two thirds of the new TB cases: India,China,Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and South Africa.

Nigeria is one of the countries included among the 30 high burden countries for TB, TB/HIV and DR-TB . According to the WHO, the estimated incidence of TB in Nigeria is 322 per 100 000 population with only 15% of the total burden of the disease in the country being notified in 2015 (1).

Pretomanid was approved for use with Zyvox and Sirturo.
